About: Research Development and Coordination

The current Director of the Directorate of Research Development and Coordination (DRDP) is Dr. Julius D. Keyyu, who was appointed for that by the TAWIRI Board in 2006. Dr. Keyyu is a Chief Research Officer and an eminent scientist with vast experience in disease ecology, habitat connectivity, research coordination and promotion, leadership and administration, networking, policy influencing, grant writing, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, Corruption and Ethics Infrastructure, just to mention a few.  As an eminent and research guru (h index 27), Dr. Keyyu has contributed to science and knowledge generation through a total of 107 papers in peer reviewed journals (4 in Science journal), 71 papers in Conference proceedings, 3 registered patents (two on hair loss prevention/ hair growth promotion and one on skin lightening/wrinkle improvement, of which one has been commercialized), 4 book chapters, 13 consultancy services, 31 research grants, and supervision of 6 graduate students. Most of the publications can be accessed with PubMed (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) and other citation indexes.

DIRECTORATE OF RESEARCH IN A NUTSHELL

The Directorate of Research Development and Coordination (DRCP) is the engine of the Institute as it is responsible for moving ahead the core business of the institute, which is to conduct, coordinate and oversee all wildlife research and related work in Tanzania. The overall purpose being to generate timely and quality scientific information for use by the Government and wildlife managers for informed decision on management and utilization of wildlife resources in Tanzania.

SECTIONS OF THE DIRECTORATE OF RESEARCH

In order to achieve the functions, the Directorate has four (4) Sections namely Research Management and Coordination, Research Development and Promotion, Veterinary Science and Wildlife Laboratories and lastly Conservation Information and Monitoring section. Details and functions of each section are as follows;-

1. Research Management and Coordination Section

This Section is responsible with coordination and management of all wildlife research in Tanzania as per Function 5(f) of the Institute. Specifically, the section deals with facilitating issuance of research ethics clearance for Tanzanians and foreigners who want to conduct wildlife research in Tanzania, as well as monitoring of research activities and compliance of researchers to stipulated regulations and guidelines.

2. Research Development and Promotion Section

This Section is responsible for carrying out and promoting the carrying out of wildlife research in Tanzania as per Function 5(b, d) of the Institute; as well as promotion of the Tanzania wildlife research agenda that stipulates priority areas for wildlife research in Tanzania.  Specifically, the section deals with promoting the development of wildlife research programmes and projects of the Institute for TAWIRI researchers

3. Veterinary Science and Wildlife Laboratories Section

This Section is responsible for conducting investigations on wildlife diseases, wildlife disease control, as well as monitoring of wildlife health in all ecosystems in Tanzania as per Function 5(e) of the Institute.

4. Conservation Information and Monitoring Section

This Section is responsible for wildlife statistics/ population monitoring in Tanzania through carrying out ecosystem or National wide wildlife census as per Function 5(h) of the Institute. Specifically, the section is charged with the responsibility of generation of information on the status of wildlife in Tanzania through production of statistics on wildlife species population data in terms of number, trend (stable, increasing, decreasing) and distribution, as well as conservation threats especially status of human activities.
